Ultraviolet Water & Air Purification

Ultraviolet Water Purification is a unique and highly effective means of destroying all types of bacteria, mold, virus’ and algae without the use of heat or chemical additives, which may undesirably alter the composition of the water.  UV Air Systems are equally effective at destroying airborne microbes protecting personnel, patients and stored foods from infection or risk of cross infection.

How It Works:
Ultraviolet radiation, when produced in the short wave form has an awesome germ killing potential.  The most efficient source is low-pressure mercury vapor germicidal lamps that produce wavelengths in the 2500 angstrom range.  Microbial destruction occurs upon direct UV exposure.  The degree of destruction is a function of both time and intensity of radiation. As contaminated water (or air) flows past these special UV germicidal lamps, bacteria are zapped dead 

Advantages
The unique advantage of UV water sterilization is that nothing is added to the water.  When chemical methods of treatment are used there are handling problems, taste considerations and odor concerns, not to mention the undesirable reactions with other substances in the water.   

The difference is most significant when producing water for drinking or swimming, processing foods and bottled beverages, manufacturing cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, use in hospitals and research, and tertiary treatment of municipal or industrial water.

Chlorine Versus Ultraviolet Purification

As a tertiary treatment for water, chlorination offers the advantage of continued disinfection's after initial treatment, since some chlorine remains in the water with residual germ-fighting action.  However, Ultraviolet purification has none of the following disadvantages of chlorine:

  • Chlorine treatment requires operation attention.

  • Chlorine gas is extremely dangerous and may even be lethal.

  • Chlorine itself is a highly corrosive and toxic chemical.

  • Chlorine imparts undesirable taste to the water and decreases pH levels.

  • Chlorine is chemically active and can react with foreign ingredients to form toxic compounds

It combines with ammonia to form chloramines which is acutely toxic to fish even at low concentrations. It may combine with phenol to form chlorophenols which is also highly toxic.
